It had already created a peaceful nuclear program in the years after World War II, and the nation's forced withdrawal during the Suez Canal crisis helped set the nationalistic tone needed to back weaponization.
One author connects France's decision to go nuclear with something he calls " national identity conception" - essentially, how a nation views its place in the world. Britain didn't want to rely wholly on the U.S. for protection, so the nation built the bomb as a means of self-defense. France, on the other hand, decided to build the bomb a few years later in a quest to reassert its power status. When Britain built the bomb, World War II was fresh in everyone's memory and Western Europe was on edge over fears the Soviet Union would attempt to expand further into Europe.

" I think the intel community assesses - and I agree - that Kim Jong-un is on the path he's on right now because he believes that's necessary to enhance the survival of his regime. For North Korea, it's largely about internal stability - protecting against regime change.
But going nuclear empowers governments in lots of other ways. If two nations can strike each other with a nuclear weapon and kill millions, then the chance one attacks the other decreases significantly. But these nations go nuclear for a lot of different reasons - and it rarely has to do with actually using a nuclear weapon.
The most obvious reason nations build nuclear weapons is deterrence.Other countries aren't shy about potentially acquiring their own.North Korea is the latest, and it wants more. In that time, nine countries have acquired them. Nuclear weapons have been around for more than 70 years.

Quite a few people complained about this there as well. (By the way: Limiting the note-area to typical paper sizes to allow better printing is something the old OneNote-application offers and that was also dropped in the newer app. It would be useless to set the canvas to A4, just to have the image break over two pages or to be forced to fumble with the text above it for 10 minutes, until the page-break is "just right". Of course, this recommendation only makes sense as part of a larger strategy for excellent note-printing in general. If I could limit the canvas size, I could make a sketch that makes good use of one A4-page and also gets printed this way. In effect, such problems force you to put notes with sketches into other tools like word, instead of the dedicated note-app, if you have to / want to print or to export to pdf. Or they don't fit well onto one page and just get cut in the middle. If they are too big, they get too compressed to be useful and it is hard to judge this "breaking point" on a free canvas. Regular texts just flows over to the next paper, but sketches often don't print well. One big problem with sketches is printing them / the notes that they are embedded in. I was able to move them around, but I would like to have a delete-option as well.ģ) limit canvas size to actual paper size I found no way to actually delete areas I selected with the "cutter"-tool. (Or both for easier navigation, a "hand"-tool to which Evernote defaults if I de-select any other tool.) I would like to have either a "hand"-tool wich allows scrolling by finger / mouse or the option to de-select the chosen tool and to return to such a mode. (Which is not available if I flip my 2-in-1 laptop.) The only thing that worked for me was the dedicated "scolling" feature of my touchpad. I found no easy way to freely move around the drawing area in order to see different parts of a sketch. Here a few recommendations for further improvement:ġ) an easy way to move around on the canvas So this is a great step in my opinion, even if the main application still needs to grow a lot further.) (No sketches were one of the main reason why I switched to OneNote years ago, and I would be glad if the Evernote 10 grows into a tool that could replace it again. This is in my opinion a huge improvement to Evernote on Windows. I just played around with the new sketch mode. I know it’s got a beach, an amazing coast and the pier so I think it’s going to be really nice - and the weather should be good, right?ĬC: Finally, what are your personal cultural highlights at the moment?ĮG: At the moment I’ve been really into watching lots of drag shows here in Berlin, as well as drag king shows - women dressing as men. So far, it’s working!Įlena visiting her family's hometown in PolaĬC: Do you know what to expect from Brighton Fringe?ĮG: Not at all - I’ve done Edinburgh for about four years running, so I know what to expect there, but I’ve no idea about Brighton. I then thought I could make a living out of it - which is what everyone really wants to do, isn’t it? Make a living out of your passion. I got to hear their stories, and it changed from being a show that people watch to a show that people are involved in. It went really well, everyone loved my set, and I thought this was probably for me because I got to get up on stage and say what I wanted to say and talk to the audience. I ended up winning my semi-final and getting through to the grand final. I’d tried writing my own things in school, so I thought I’d give it a go. I hope it’s something my grandchildren will be impressed with!ĬC: You studied at Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art - was it there that you became interested in cabaret? What first drew you to the form?ĮG: I graduated from NIDA in 2008 and at the end of the course we were given the opportunity to enter a cabaret competition. It’s a nice feeling to have something to put beside your name. It’s a fun city.ĬC: What’s it like being a Guinness World Record Holder?ĮG: You know what? I think it sounds way more impressive than it feels! I did put a lot of work into those Guinness World Records and it came off in the end. It feels a bit like you’re Alice in Wonderland, falling down the rabbit hole, looking at all these incredible parties and people. It’s an amazing place to live, so many artists come here, and it’s a very transient city as well people come and go quite often. It’s so interesting to see how nothing really changes.ĬC: How have you found Berlin since moving there? It’s got a big cabaret history, has that been inspiring?ĮG: Absolutely - I’ve been doing a lot of research on the Weimar era. They’re facing all the same things that my family faced when they came to Australia as refugees - hate, uncertainty, fear - and all that still surrounds us. Flash forward 60 years and people still don’t really want to leave their home unless they have to. There’s really nothing different - they have the exact same feelings. It’s been amazing meeting Syrian refugees and hearing their stories whilst at the same time talking to my great-aunt and my grandmother about theirs. It’s been quite emotional but also an amazing experience.ĬC: You talk about your refugee grandmother’s journey from Australia to Germany 60 years ago - has that had any impact on how you view the current refugee situation?ĮG: Yes, it definitely has - especially in Berlin. I’ve tried to experience this culture and understand what made them decide to move to Australia all those years ago how hard it must have been. I’ve been reading my great-uncle’s WW2 diary and now that I’m living here in Europe I’ve been travelling back and visiting cousins I’ve never met before. I’ve been very lucky to work with a great director - Sameena Zehra - who has been an incredible help and guidance to me when writing the show.ĬC: What’s it like working on something so close to home?ĮG: It's been quite an emotional show to write. It’s a different part of the brain that you’re working with. This time I’ve had to go deep, and do more soul-searching, in terms of the storytelling. How do find switching between the forms?Įlena Gabrielle: It’s a really interesting creative process because you naturally go towards what you know - which for me is dressing up, becoming a character, singing funny songs - that sort of burlesque stuff. We spoke to international cabaret star and two-time Guinness World Record holder Elena Gabrielle about her Brighton Fringe debut and her new show Glitter Gangster – which follows her experience of emigrating to Europe from Australia and retracing her grandmother’s own footsteps as a refugee 60 years earlier.Ĭulture Calling: Your new show is confessional when compared to your MC and burlesque work. I can alter the plan as I go along according to my progress). This tells me that its ok to adjust as I go along. If I was to do this again, the things I would do differently would include, as usual, better time management (I still finished within my time frame and completed within my deadline, but I didn’t stick the the initial schedule I set. Because near the end I was testing and there were glitches which I needed to rectify, but I managed to do this towards the end, so it all worked out ok, but these are things that are worth mentioning as I can be aware of this in the future if I ever decide to release a similar tutorial video series. The most difficult part of making the video series was making part three, this is because the mouth and eyes are pretty hard to do (you’ll see this in the third video). The best part of my arts award (part 2) was the actual making of the videos and setting up the website, because these are the parts I enjoyed most. That’s the good thing about reviewing your own work, you can always think of ways to make your work better. My plan worked pretty well, although I guess I could improve on it next time. Part 2E – Review of my project –My leadership skills improved because after watching and reviewing my own videos, I could see how I could explain things better in future, so that people can understand fully what I’m demonstrating. It shows how to model the ‘Steve’ character for the rig. Video 1 – a tutorial video showing modelling and texturing. I also had some photos taken of me as I was working through the last 4 weeks. I made some notes as I was doing the videos, including a brief end of week review for each of the 4 weeks. (click on the highlighted link to view the pdf document). Part 2 C/D – Deliver my project – See Below.ĭylan progress notes (pdf) – This is a pdf document of my progress notes. (click on the highlighted link to view the pdf) Silver arts award unit 2A (pdf) part 2A & 2B Planning of my project – This pdf contains my plan, timetable and practical issues, including a 4 week detailed plan of action. I will be designing, and programming the cinema 4D rig as a demonstration, but I will also be teaching others how to do the same by creating the tutorial videos as I go along. My Role – obviously, my role will be teacher, programmer, and designer. So I am very pleased to be able to pass on the knowledge I have gained through my own research and experience. (as I have been teaching myself to use this software for my own personal programming passion). I have done many hours of research in the weeks leading up to this arts award. Leadership skills and qualities – I will be demonstrating and explaining how to create a minecraft Steve rig using cinema 4D software, including every aspect of what is involved in a step by step way, explaining in simple terms so that people can follow as I create a rig in real-time on the video tutorials. I will access my audience through social media such as twitter and facebook and I will gain some feedback using facebook also, as well as word of mouth and emailing my friends and family to give me feedback for my efforts. I am choosing Minecraft’s Steve character because he has been the main minecraft character since the game began and he is very well-known and popular. (other characters can be imported to the software to make 3D versions, such as Roblox characters or other online profile characters and avatars). It is after all a specialised type of software which is not available for free, so these tutorials are not for everyone, there is a niche of budding young programmers (like myself) who love to use this kind of advanced 3D software to create and alter images to make new and awesome rigs. My Audience will be people who are beginners and people who are new to cinema 4D, as well as individuals who are familiar with the software but want some tips on how to create minecraft rigs. I have also created this website to present my whole Silver level arts award, this hopefully demonstrates my design and creative abilities also. I aim to make 3 videos outlining and showing how to create a rig from scratch. And here is a link for more information about cinema 4D – My chosen software for this arts award.Īims and Scope – I aim to be able to effectively demonstrate and teach other people to use cinema 4D software to create minecraft rigs, with a series of tutorial videos. What fuels him most is envy, reaching incredulously forward (“The seed of Banquo kings?”) and backward to color the despair of “Duncan is in his grave.” The words, and the mind behind them, are rancid, and it is this mood that takes possession of his last scenes. Once her prosaic, limited ambition is achieved, she is of no more use to him and he shrugs her off “she would have died hereafter” is a moment of exasperation that dares our laughter. His wife pulls him along a road that he would travel anyway and he can allow himself scruples, knowing that she will be there to mop them up. McKellen’s Macbeth is witty not merely the horror but the absurdity of his actions strikes him from the outset, and he can regard his downfall as an inexorable joke. The New York Times raved about the production, declaring McKellen “the best equipped British actor of his generations:” A priest used to sit on the front row, whenever he could scrounge a ticket, holding out his crucifix to protect the cast from the evil we were raising. Somehow it was magic: and black magic, too. My uniform jacket had buttons embossed with ‘Birmingham Fire Service’ my long, leather coat didn’t fit, nor did Banquo‘s so we had to wear them slung over the shoulder Judi Dench, as Lady Macbeth, wore a dyed tea-towel on her head. John Napier‘s entire set cost £200 and the costumes were a ragbag of second-hand clothes. It was beautifully done on the cheap in The Other Place, the old tin hut along from the main theatre. As McKellen recalled in a longer meditation on the trickiness of staging this particular tragedy: McKellen was, at the time, deeply immersed in Macbeth, playing the title role opposite Judi Dench in a bare bones Royal Shakespeare Company production that opened in the company’s Stratford studio before transferring to the West End. In this way, he says, “the actor is the playwright and the character simultaneously.” Tennant, who played the Doctor from 2005 to 2010, is “the kindest, most generous actor”, she added.Instead, he calls upon actors to apply the power of their intellect to every line, analyzing metaphors and imagery, while also noting punctuation, word choice, and of course, the events leading up to the speech. The Channel 4 series was their first project together although “we moved around each other in the Doctor Who universe” because she was in the BBC sci-fi show’s spin-off, Torchwood, in 2009. Working together on the crime drama Deadwater Fell, before she played Shakespeare’s tragic prince, Jumbo and Tennant discussed Hamlet and Shakespeare in depth, she said. “You really can’t have much more of a workout than that – you come back with much stronger muscles for next time,” she said. Her last Shakespearean role, as Hamlet at the Young Vic in 2021, was “life-changing” for Jumbo, who praised the support she had received from fellow cast members, particularly the younger actors, as it is “an enormous show to carry” as the lead. “We’re leaning into the psychology of that rather than: ‘Abracadabra, here are three witches!’” As such, one task will be “to make sense of the supernatural” in a modern setting. Webster, who directed Kit Harington as Henry V at the Donmar last year, stages Shakespeare “in the now”, said Jumbo, “not somewhere in the past”. The timing has to be right, she reflected this week, adding that she is looking forward to exploring the role as a mother (she has a young son). Jumbo said it had been “a joy to investigate Shakespeare” in such an intimate venue on that occasion and that Lady Macbeth is an irresistible part for actors: “She’s on everybody’s list.” Two years ago, in conversation with Anne-Marie Duff for the Guardian, she said that she would love to play the role.
